Welcome to the Companions of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. We are an all-volunteer force delivering the charitable works of the Order of Malta in Great Britain. Our mission is to practise our faith and to practise charity.
The themed evenings have continued at the Thursday soup kitchen in Marylebone. For the start of Wimbledon Tennis championship week – the homeless guests enjoyed a delicious supper – ice lollies first whilst they waited in the queue, a variety of hot meals once in the hall followed by strawberries and cream. The room was decorated with the signature Wimbledon Tennis Championship colours of purple and light green tablecloths and Helium tennis ball balloons stood over the tables. One of our regular volunteers, Eugenie, played a meddly of pieces on the grand piano.
A few weeks earlier we commemorated the D-Day 75th Anniversary. Toy parachute figures were hung from the ceiling. Five tables were decorated with blue and yellow tablecloths to symbolise the beaches. Each of these five tables had the name of the important beach landings. (Utah, Sword, Omaha, Gold and Juno ) with the relevant flag eg Canadian, US and British. Danny, one of our regular homeless guests, had been to the Imperial War Museum and brought with him 50 mock-up newspapers of the day and Roger, a regular volunteer pianist, played suitable music – “We’ll Meet Again…” We served French cheeses for pudding and Strawberries and Cream. The guests were delighted with the evening.
