Medical and humanitarian activities of the British Association
The British Association is involved in a number of pilgrimages throughout the year: Lourdes (international) in May, Walsingham in September and Holywell in August. Members and Companions join together to visit these shrines, bringing with them sick and handicapped pilgrims. Its activities include running soup kitchens, teas for the elderly lonely, breakfast clubs for the homeless and support projects around the country for those in need.
The young volunteers – the Order of Malta Volunteers (OMV) organise their own pilgrimage to Lourdes in July in addition to running their own projects.
For more information on the OMV, please visit www.omv.org.uk
The hospitaller activities are coordinated by the British Association’s Hospitaller and through The Companions of the Order of Malta. The Companions of the Order of Malta is a membership society open to all those who wish to support the Order and its work and through whom volunteers are recruited to assist in these works.

The Association’s Foreign Aid Service (FAS) raises money to respond to disaster and emergency situations as well as to provide long-term sustainable support to the most needy people in the world. The FAS works within the international framework of the Order of Malta , and particularly Malteser International. The organisation provides humanitarian aid in all parts of the globe without distinction of religion, race or political persuasion. Christian values and the humanitarian principles of impartiality and independence are the foundation of its work. Staffed by volunteers, the FAS is low-cost, and benefits from the international reach and scale of the Order to be effective.
The Association is also the lead partner in the Orders of St John Care Homes Trust – responsible for the running of over 60 homes for nursing and residential care throughout England.

About

The mission of the Order of Malta is inspired by its tradition of ‘Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum', to assist the poor and the sick, and bear witness to the Christian faith.

The Sovereign Order of Malta is a sovereign subject of international law. The Order - which is based in Rome, in via Condotti - has its own Government, an independent magistracy, and bilateral diplomatic relations with 110 countries.

The Order of St John of Jerusalem is one of the oldest institutions of Western and Christian civilisation. Present in Palestine in around 1048, it is a lay religious Order, traditionally of military, chivalrous, noble nature.
