Novena in lieu of our BRITISH ASSOCIATION Pilgrimage to Lourdes from Friday 30th April – Saturday 8th May 2021

Novena in lieu of our BRITISH ASSOCIATION Pilgrimage to Lourdes
Friday 30th April – Saturday 8th May 2021
By Fr Stephen Morrison O.Praem., Lead Chaplain of the Pilgrimage

Welcome to this “Virtual Pilgrimage” Novena. Since for a second year running we are unable to be in
Lourdes together this year, let us join each other in prayer during these nine days, which will begin
on the day our Pilgrimage was due to leave for Lourdes! You will find this easy, I hope! For each day
there are some suggested prayer intentions (you can of course add to these as many as you like!),
and there follows a short Reflection and a Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes for each day. I suggest that
we end our daily meditation by simply reciting an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory be. Exactly
when you say the Novena is entirely up to you, but it is often helpful to fit it in to one’s daily routine
of prayers (morning/evening) so as not to miss a day.
We are all sincerely hoping that the pilgrimage can resume “as normal” next year… meanwhile, let
us ask Mary to give us all patience and perseverance, and to hear the desire of our hearts to be with
her at her Grotto… when we were last there, we asked her to bring us back, one day… and she will
not fail to hear and answer that noble petition.
With my love to you all, dear Pilgrims and friends, and my prayers in conjunction with yours, Fr
Stephen

Day 1 Friday 30th April
For all British Association Accueil Pilgrims to Lourdes (past, present, and future).
For all the sick and housebound.
For all those who haven’t left their house since last year’s novena.
For all who care for the sick and disabled.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
She is an example of perfect humanity, to inspire us who are imperfect. She
is free from all sin, and is “full of grace!” We wish to be filled with grace
from God too, especially since our isolation during the past year has led us
to think that we are sometimes “running on empty.” Help us, Mary!
Prayer: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that
anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine
ntercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O
Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and
sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in
thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us!
Day 2 Saturday 1st May
For all British Association Volunteer Pilgrims to Lourdes (past, present, and future)
For all our volunteer’s families: parents, children, grandchildren.
For all who have not been able to volunteer at Lourdes as stagiers,
brancardiers, hospitalité, and so on.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
She is free from Original Sin. We, however, still struggle to avoid sin and
choose the good instead. In Baptism, the stain of original sin (which Mary
never had) is washed away in us, and every time we go to confession,
absolution washes away all sin we have committed and restores our soul to
the beauty it had on the day of our Baptism. Help us, Mary, to resemble you
in your sinless perfection!
Prayer: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who
fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by
this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I
stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy
mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us!
Day 3 Sunday 2nd May
For the Lieutenant Grand Master and his intentions
For the intentions of all the professed knights of the Grand Priory of England
For the increase of religious vocations to the Order
For those whom God will call to profession in the future
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.” We know that our Order needs to
imitate Mary in offering God the service of a pure heart, a clean heart, an undivided heart. The
profession of our knights of justice is an example to all of us at the heart of the Order, and we thank
God for them. Today, let us each make a resolution to seek from Mary’s hands the grace to love God
whole-heartedly, with purity of intention, and without mixed motives. Help us, Mary, to serve God
and our neighbour perfectly, and ennoble our efforts with your grace! Prayer: Remember, O most
gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy
help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O
Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother
of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us!
Day 4 Monday 3rd May
For HE the President of British Association and his intentions.
For all officers of the British Association.
For all Knights, Dames and all invested Members of the British Association,
living and deceased.
For those due to be invested soon, and for their families.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.” By virtue of her purity, Mary’s will is
not impeded by sin in any way, but is perfectly aligned to the Will of God the Father. That’s how she
is able to say ‘yes’ to him in such beautiful terms, saying to the Archangel Gabriel: “Let it be done to
me according to thy word.” Our will, on the other hand, is weak and fickle, but at Lourdes we renew
our intention to align our will with the Will of God. Mary, help us to abandon ourselves to Divine
Providence, and be ready to do whatever God wants of us, today and every day! Prayer: Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly
unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and
sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and
answer me. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us!
Day 5 Tuesday 4th May
For all Companions of the Order and their families.
For all our friends, volunteers, partners and collaborators.
For all members of the OMV, living and deceased.
For the success of all the Hospitaller works and projects of the Order, and
for all who are helped by the groups just mentioned.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Although she was a perfect human
being, she was like us in all other respects, and Mary knew what it was to suffer, to work, and to
fight injustice with kindness and generous service. We too have sorrows as well as joys, and we can
ask Mary to be our Mother in good times as well as bad. Mary, help us never to tire of doing what is
right. Be with us, Mary, in our work and our prayer, that we may be as gentle and loving as you are!
Prayer: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to
thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this
confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy
hear and answer me. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us!
Day 6 Wednesday 5th May
For the repose of the souls of all the Faithful Departed, especially those members
and friends of the Order who have recently died.
For all who lost their lives to Covid-19.
For all those holy souls who have no one left to remember them.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.” When her earthly life was over, Mary
was taken body and soul into Heaven, at her Assumption. Like her son Jesus, then, her body was not
left in the grave to experience corruption, but she was taken up to enjoy the Resurrection of her Son
forever. We too, though we die and are laid to rest, know that the grave will not have the last word.
When our remains are buried, we know that on the Last Day they will rise again. When that
happens, Mary, be with us and take us to Heaven! Be now a Mother to our loved ones who have
died; release them from purgatory and accompany them to the peace and joy of eternal life. Prayer:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy
protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Day 7 Thursday 6th May
For an end to the global coronavirus pandemic.
For all who serve to deliver front-line services.
For all who work in the medical profession.
For all “Our Lords the Poor and the Sick”.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Mary is called “most holy” because
she is most like God, the Holy One. We want to be holy, we want to be saints! In Baptism and
Confirmation, we were consecrated, made holy for God. Sometimes we live up to that calling,
sometimes we fall short of it. At Lourdes, we take seriously our call to sanctification. To be holy
simply means to live as God wants, in friendship with him. Mary, make us holy! Mary, make us
saints!
Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…

Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us!
Day 8 Friday 7th May
For HM The Queen, for our Nation, for the Commonwealth,
for all who serve in HM Government, for all world leaders,
and for Peace among nations.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.” St Bernadette must have wondered at
those words. Did she know what a blessing pilgrimages to the grotto would become for France, and
for the rest of the world? Historically, France has long loved Our Lady, but so have we: England is
called the “Dowry of Mary.” May we who, across the United Kingdom, acclaim Our Lady as our
patroness, never cease to love her as our Mother. Mary, help our country and our society to love
God more! May our penances and our pilgrimages serve to kindle in our nation the flame of faith
that shines so brightly at the evening processions in Lourdes! Prayer: Remember, O most gracious
Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or
sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of
virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the
Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…

Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us!
Day 9 Saturday 8th May
For the intentions of His Holiness the Pope
For the Church throughout the world
For all catechumens and converts
For the peace of Jerusalem and the holy places;
and according to the intentions of all who have prayed this novena.
Reflection: Mary says “I am the Immaculate Conception.” In her sinless beauty, Mary is the
model of untarnished Faith. “Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what
was spoken to her from the Lord” (Lk 1:45). One of the beautiful sights of Lourdes is the
international rosary, which begins with our singing the Credo together. Many voices, one Faith.
Mary, you believed in God perfectly: help us in our doubts and lack of faith, and say with us the
Creed of the Church, so that we may truly believe in our hearts what our lips proclaim, and grow
more deeply in that Faith which we profess! Amen! Prayer: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine
intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my
mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word
Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
