The Donation Hub is on the Move
The Brompton Oratory Fathers kindly let the Companions move into St Joseph’s hall back in 2020 – less than two weeks after the first lockdown in 2020. The Donation Hub – Help the Homeless project commenced. The hub has been in the hall from April to July 2020 and November 2020 – May 2021. It was a wonderful space and we would not have achieved supporting so many homeless, without the use of this facility. During this period of time we have donated over 65,000 items of clothing, shoes, toiletries and small items of entertainment e.g. Books etc. to the homeless.
At St Joseph’s Hall, the Companions put together 806 Christmas parcels with four items of clothing and 15 different toiletries per parcel in December 2020 in the hall. All these tiny parts were assembled in one evening and sent to 15 different centres around England and Scotland.
At Easter we sent 600 Easter parcels with five items in each one to the different centres, once again assembled in the hall. The Companions also put together 167 Easter baskets and 80 Easter hampers for the elderly and the staff at the OSJCT care homes.
And finally, last summer the Companions packed a collection of gifts from Lourdes and sent them to the hospital pilgrims, that would have been coming to Lourdes on the May pilgrimage, delivered in time for St John’s Day.
The Donation Hub has moved, but the project will continue to serve the 600 – 800 homeless in the hotels and hostels in the Westminster area. At present it will be operating from Spanish Place. There was just a handful of volunteers at the start, but this grew during the first phase. The second phase from November 2020 until May this year, saw new volunteers joining and the return of most of the original team. It has been a fabulous collaberative project with Members of the Order, Order of Malta Volunteers and Companions all working together. A great achievement.
